Some All Too Common Tattoo Mistakes

By Arthur Bradley

You should not take the decision to get a tattoo lightly, if you pick the wrong one or even just change your mind after it has been done then there aren't really many options you have to get it removed. If you find a really good artist then they can try to cover over a bad tattoo, but that is a complex process so really it is better to choose carefully and get it right first time.

Here are some tips to help you avoid the most common tattoo problems:

Make sure you know who will be doing the work: We've already discussed how important it is that you get your tattoo right, and that means getting the right person to actually do the work. The skill level of artists varies massively and in most countries I don't think there is even an exam that people need to take for them to set up as a tattoo artists.

So that is why if I go to get tattoo now then the first thing I do is buy some tattoo magazines and have a look through for featured artists. The interviews they do and awards they give allow you to highlight which artists are skillful and passionate and which are just out to make some fast money, then you can choose from there. Alright I admit you are not going to find someone near you unless you are very lucky, which means you need to travel if you want to get them to do the work, but at least you know the work will be top notch.

Please check and double check any words: Unfortunately misspelled words are one of the most common and embarrassing mistakes that I see happening. Often this happens when people want specific words or a phrase inked onto themselves and they just walk in and tell the artist what they want and let them do it. The best way to go about it is to write it out in a word processing program first. That way you can spell check it to spot obvious errors, and you can double check it yourself, plus you can easily amend it if you need to as well. Then print it off and take it to the artist to have it done once you are happy with it.

Think ahead: I wish I had received this advice before I started to get tattoos, even though you are really excited about getting your first tattoo and don't know if you want any more then think about what you need to do if you do want more. Take some time to think about how easy it will be to add other tattoos around the one you chose, or maybe how to expand the one you chose, space on your body is only finite and you need to plan carefully. You will probably end up getting at least two or three more tattoos, if not a lot more, and if they are all individual designs which don't mesh in any way then that can look strange, so instead follow a theme or get multiple tattoos in one area which join up nicely to form a much larger piece.
