It would be easier to start searching while they are in school and you might even want to surprise the children with they get home and have one waiting for them.
You will still be able to look around to find the one that is in the best condition and that has the best price. Going to garage sales or searching online would help you find a better deal and something you would be able to afford. Once you have picked out your favorite one, take down the price and start your calculations.
It is always nice to have a second pair of eyes looking over you while you are calculating everything out because if you make a mistake, they might be able to catch it and correct it before you end up buying it. It can also save you from having to go through the hassle of returning it to get your money back for your extra bills.

This is a good reason to make sure your entire calculations end up correctly before you buy one so you will not have to risk the thought of returning it or selling any of your things to be able to pay for it.
