Nandita Das - Film Career Till Today

The fame and reach of Nandita Das - her acting and her movies - is not just restricted to Indian sub continent but has found a niche internationally also. She is the perfect of example of modern day woman who wants to bring about change in society by altering the old practices and making people aware. She, through her pick of unusual films and characters, attempts to bring forward the human dilemmas, feelings and other unnoticed problems.

It was through an Oriya movie Parinati(1996) that Nandita Das made silver screen entry. But she really got popular for the controversial movie Fire directed by Deepa Mehta. As Sita in that film, she talks about homosexuality without inhibitions. She skillfully enacts the dilemmas and family situation of a woman whose wishes are being unnoticed by her husband. Her sister-in-law turns out to be her friend in this confused state as she also goes through the same situation. Their wish for comfortable life makes them accept their relation and they start living together.

She has always chosen films that saw problems, ideas and ideology from a new and different view. Her masters in social work and the experience with many NGOs has made her understand the social set up and other governmental organizations better. Through the different characters like Kannaki, Nandini Mitra, Shanta, Shyama, Sanwari, Sajani, she portrays various female characters. Her selection of movies is often related to an issue and complex in nature.

The riots of Gujarat in 2002, affected her deeply - how people suffered during and after the riots and how society responded to it. She made Firaaq, the narrative of which was written by taking many true accounts related to the tragic riot. The film depicts the lives of individuals who are stunned by the riot, who have lost someone or who are searching for their loved ones and dear ones. The movie fetched many national and international awards for best movie and best script.

Nandita Das is well-known for her acting talent in English, Malayalam, Hindi, Oriya, Kannada, Urdu, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi and Tamil. Some of the directors of national and international acclaim with whom she worked are Mani Ratnam, Deepa Mehta, Shyam Benegal, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Mrinal Sen. Apart from being an actor, she takes classes in different universities on topics like violence against women, AIDS, problems face by children and involves keenly to bring about about social change. She is also the chair person of Children's Film Society of India.

Nandita Das is daughter to popular painter Jatin Das and writer Varsha. Hailing from New Delhi, she got associated with theatre after completing her studies, in addition to teaching at a school. Subodh Maskara is her husband and they are blessed with a son, Vihaan.
