Lego Hogwarts Express - Now Leaving for Hogsmeade Station

By Carlton T. Driver

he Lego set is one of the most popular construction sets developed in the last century. Before Lego was developed, the most popular construction set was almost certainly the Erector Set. Consisting of stamped steel girders, plates, and screws and nuts, it was a favorite construction toy of the middle part of the last century. Now, the Lego brick has displaced that old favorite, and has become the most significant toy of its type. Recently, Lego has begun to expand its line by developing new lines of Lego sets with themes based on a variety of subjects, like the Harry Potter stories.

One of the most popular elements of the Harry Potter novels is the Hogwarts Express train, which leaves from Platform 9-3/4 at London's famous King's Cross Station every September 1 at precisely 11:00 O'clock. The train makes the trip to Hogsmeade Station, taking them to Hogwarts Castle.

The newest version of this classic train, Set 4841, includes the red steam locomotive, a tender car, and a passenger coach. Features of the train include a removable roof on the passenger coach, allowing the passengers to be seated within. Magnetic couplers are used to keep the cars in contact with each other. The entire train set is over 21 inches long. Other accessories included in the set are figures of Harry (of course), Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley, Luna Lovegood, and Draco Malfoy. Of course, no trip would be complete without the white owl Hedwig! The characters all have their wands, and an invisibility cloak.

The tender car opens up so that the wizards' luggage can be stored inside it. When snack time comes around, the snack trolley that is used to bring the ice cream during the train ride is also there. Another feature that's included is Mr. Weasley's flying car, so that Ron and Harry can fly over the train. In addition to the train itself, this version of the Lego Hogwarts Express set also has such extras as lamp posts, station clocks, and broomsticks. When the wizards get to platform 9-3/4, the wall can be spun to reveal the secret platform.

This set represents the fourth version of the Hogwarts Express that Lego has created. Prior to this one, they had developed a motorized version, as well as two non-motorized versions. None of those sets are still being produced, but a small number of new sets can still be found, and are available from secondary sources (see the resource box).

The first version was the Lego Hogwarts Express Model 4708, with 410 pieces. This set included Platform 9-3/4 with, naturally, its magic spinning wall. The cast figures included with the set are Harry, Hermoine Granger, and Ron Weasley. They have wands, and naturally there is a white owl who travels with them as well.

The second version of the Hogwarts Express was Model 4758, with 386 pieces. It was not able to run on Lego track without a few modifications. The figures included with the set are Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermoine Granger, Professor Lupin, and a Dementor. The top of the engine boiler can be lifted off to reveal a secret compartment. This version of the set includes Hogsmeade Station.

The third previous version of the Hogwarts Express is the Model 10132. It was produced in 2004. It is quite unique, as it is the only motorized version of the train that Lego has produced. It also features Hogsmeade Station, and has the same mini-figures as set 4758. The set includes a circular track, as well as a speed control for the train. In addition to the engine, the train includes a tender car, and the passenger coach.

If you are a major Potter fan yourself, or if you have a Harry Potter fan on your Christmas list, just follow the links in the Resource Box and get your set ordered, before they are gone! This new set will be in short supply very quickly.
