How To Become A Travel Photographer

By Amalia Buchanan

The life of a travel photographer can be interesting as it can be daunting. Patience, stamina, quick reflexes, and a healthy dose of passion are amongst the virtues they possess. If you have had the privilege of ever meeting one, you will attest to their impressive knowledge of various subjects, which obviously comes from their years of numerous sojourns.

If you gaze at their portfolios, the subjects are often diverse and unrelated. They cover distant lands and icons from not too far away. They have the ability to see the unique angle in everything. As such, while popular landmarks like the Statute of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower might be part of the pictures in their folder, they often go beyond that to include series which might range from a child in Africa to a bride in Asia.

Despite the fact that their pictures are marked by exotic destinations, most people in this career pick a genre and go with it. Therefore it is not uncommon to see one who focuses mostly on cultural weddings in different parts of the world or some other targeted niche.

The field is quite wide and while there are some who practice freelance, there are others who are attached to media houses. In the same way, some prefer to focus on disaster areas where there are earthquakes or civil wars. They get exposed to so many dangers and for them, that is the thrill of the career. They are actually journalists who do their reporting from behind a camera lens.

But there are also those who just prefer the leisure of moving from place to place and seeing new shores and distant lands. Those who choose this route ether decide to sponsor themselves through their journey or are fortunate to have sponsors so that they are free to follow their passion without wondering where their next meal would come from.

Following this career path demands determination and passion. While some prefer to get professional lessons so that they can master the skill, others choose the path of an apprentice, working with a skilled professional. Regardless of the path you choose, you need to determine never to give up.
