Do you watch TV just because you are bored?

By James Bradley

Wasting time in front of the television is almost a national pastime right now. According to the Nielsen Company then in the US on average people watch 34 hours of TV per week, that is nearly 5 hours per day that people watch. It is just an average so you may not watch nearly as much as that, but people all over the country are watching that much and more in order for it to average out to that, which is shocking.

When TVs used to be big and bulky then people really only had one or two in the house so watching it used to be a family affair. However now that flat screen tellys have come out so they don't take up much room, and the prices have come down, then people have a lot more of them in their houses. Now kids can watch whatever they want in their bedrooms, for as long as they want, because they are out of the prying eyes of their parents. There is also a lot of snobbery about the size of your TV now because of all the larger sizes that have come onto the market. While a 42 inch TV used to be the pinnacle of entertainment then now if it is less than 50 inches in size then it is considered small.

We are in the grip of an obesity epidemic right now and I think that watching so much TV is part of the problem because it stops us doing other things which burn calories, but some of the blame also has to fall on the cheap and abundant processed food that we see everywhere. So what can you do instead of watching so much TV?

Well probably the most rewarding and beneficial thing you could do is to start a new hobby. Everybody should be able to find a hobby they enjoy because there are so many different ones out there now that you can try out, even if not all of them get you doing anything more active than you would be doing watching TV. You have to admit though that even if you were just taking up a hobby like scrapbooking then it is better than sitting watching repeats on TV. If you are wondering where you will get enough time to start a hobby then remember people watch 20+ hours of TV a week, so even if you just halved that you would have a lot of free time to dedicate to it. With that kind of time free each week then the world is your oyster and you could do anything from learning to speak a foreign language to even learning an instrument you have always wanted to.

Or another option would be to go back to school. If you want to get a better or even just a different job then with all the extra time you'd have from not watching TV you could take night classes in something to get new qualifications. If you hate the idea of going back to school and having to actually leave the house to learn then instead you could do a course through one of the distance learning companies. There are two great ideas there to not only give you more interesting things to do, but to increase your knowledge and skills in different areas and maybe even increase your career prospects, so turn off the TV and start living!
