Dharma Productions is residence to many blockbuster movies in Bollywood. Their heart warming story lines, attractive star cast and flawless narration has been pulling in the crowd to cinema halls for many years. The success at box office for each of their movies is a sign that people from different parts of the world have loved their films.
Yash Johar established Dharma Productions Pvt Ltd in the year 1976. From the time of its establishment, it has come produced a long list of super hit Hindi films. Starting with Dostana starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and the sensuous Zeenat Aman, the firm started striking gold at the box office from the year 1980. With another ensemble of large stars in the industry was the film Duniya released in 1984 which also met with huge success. Their films had all the elements like romance, suspense, drama and s few emotional sequences. They also produced films like Gumrah, Muqaddar Ka Faisla and Agneepath.
Their reputation reached a new level and they began a new business concern owned completely by them. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), the first film directed by Karan Johar (son of Yash Johar), was produced under this concern. This movie was listed in UK Top 10, which happened for the first time in Bollywood. Hindi cinema's most charming couple, Shah Rukh and Kajol came together once more through this film. In Addition To being the biggest blockbuster of the year, the film received numerous awards for its star cast and production values, nationally and internationally. This film won in the category of Wholesome Entertainment in the National Awards, from Govt of India.
Karan Johar continued the success saga of Dharma Productions with new themes for his film which were meant for both family and youth. He wanted to attract the public to theatres, for that he made sure his movies have drama and fun in all of them.
Although, his films were considered to be with exaggerated stories and emotions but he managed to entertain people. He made sure that his film Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham is a hit, which had actors and actresses of three generations coming together. He got the returns for his efforts when the film became a success in India and abroad. In UK and US, this movie got a huge collection at the box office in 2001.
Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Kal Ho Na Ho, directed by Karan Johar were also praised. The screenplay written for the movie Kal Ho Na Ho has been kept in the library of Motion Pictures for reference. Dharma Productions have made films like Wake Up Sid and Dostana with young artists of Bollywood and Kurbaan and My Name Is Khan, with some of the much adored stars like Kajol, Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan.
