Pop Music Taking The Lead
By Dean Smith
The name of the genre alone gives credence to the perception that Pop Music is the most well-known song category. There is no single definition for it other than its popularity and commercial success. Many of the songs have similarities in the way that the lyrics are arranged and easy recall of the melodies.
It first started in the 1920s when artists laid down tracks for the sole purpose of selling a lot of singles and albums. It borrows elements from other styles such as jazz, rock or country yet still manages to keep its mass appeal. The final product has a hint of the influence but the sound is distinctly pop. It is a genre that is from America and majority of the artists are American.
At the height of their careers, Michael Jackson and Madonna ruled the airwaves in the 1980s. A decade later, it was the era of groups as the likes of Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, NSYNC, Hanson, Destiny Child and the Spice Girls flooded the industry with their harmonious sound. The turn of the millennium was greeted loudly by teen stars such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Whenever there was something new, pop music was right in the middle of it. Whether it was a new fad, a new way to record sound or new media, the pop artists were out in force. The start of MTV was also the beginning of a new era for the genre.
This genre kept its influence on culture by staying successful. New artists with new sound come out in droves, gaining new audiences with their own brand of uniqueness. As long as the labels have something to appeal to everyone, it will continue to be at the top of the melody chain.
The charts are the ultimate venue for competition between stars and company labels. It is where success is measured by the industry. Stores and radio stations send in their data to the publications for tallying. There are charts based on category, by location and by type of sales.
The list is a result of information such as airplay, requests, singles sales and album sales. In the past few years, with the emergence of digital copies, it included the number of downloads via legitimate sources and sites. Access to pop music has never been easier.
